About

One Continuous Mistake is a performance duo founded, abolished and re-founded in 2006 as a laboratory for the exploration of pain, ecstasy, and willful idiocy.

Taavo Smith is an actor, playwright, dancer and teacher interested in risk and spectacle. His experience spans a broad range of forms including butoh, clown, psychophysical acting and the radical reinvention of classical work. His plays and performance pieces have been produced in New York, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Boulder, and Melbourne. He is a published performance theorist, an amateur pizzaiolo, and covered in a thick layer of body hair. taavosmith.com

Benjamin Stuber is an interdisciplinary theatre artist.  Working across the disciplines of acting, dance, design, puppetry, choreography, teaching and adaptation — he has danced in the rain for an audience of five at six in the morning, destroyed a romantic relationship largely due to building marionettes, performed with a nail halfway through his foot, choreographed butoh to Hank Williams Sr., and with countless costume designs under his belt still does not really know how to sew. benjaminstuber.com

Benjamin and Taavo graduated from Naropa University’s MFA Theatre: Contemporary Performance and currently live in Brooklyn, New York.

One of my students wrote to me saying, “You sent me a calendar, and I am trying to follow the good mottoes which appear on each page.  But the year has hardly begun, and already I have failed!”  Dogen-zenji said, “Shoshaku jushaku.”  ...Shoshaku jushaku means “to succeed wrong with wrong,” or one continuous mistake….  A Zen master’s life could be said to be so many years of shoshaku jushaku. - Shunryu Suzuki
